PREMIERE | Bassel & The Supernaturals Release Dazzling ‘Stepping Back In Time’

Bassel & The Supernaturals premiere “Stepping Back In Time” on Medium. “Stepping Back In Time” delivers an optimistic declaration in the face of current political turmoil

According to frontman Bassel Almadani, the song “is about breaking down walls and building empathy. Our duty as artists is to confront the xenophobia consuming our society during the Trump era, and the unwinding of social progress we’ve made since 9/11. We must work together to unravel the platform that has been given to fear, and the false narratives victimizing communities of color.”

Bassel & The Supernaturals have been touring relentlessly this year, covering 15,000 miles and performing 42 shows in the first three months. Now the band is preparing to join Sinkane on tour.

With their contagious funk/soul sound, Bassel & The Supernaturals deliver potent lyrics on topics such as love, loss, and the war in Syria, which has impacted Bassel Almadani’s family, as well as 10 million others. The band burst onto the scene in 2017, when they released Elements to vast acclaim. Elements secured them a spot at SXSW’s 2017 “ContraBand: #MusicUnites” showcase.

The band donated more than 20% of merchandise proceeds to the Karam Foundation, dedicated to humanitarian relief. In addition, Bassel will be working with aspiring artists in the IMAN (Inner-City Muslim Action Network) program for one week, along with hosting a mentoring program in Istanbul, Turkey sponsored by the Karam Foundation.

“Stepping Back In Time” opens on a funky soul-filled rhythm full of delicious skiffing guitars and vibrant horn accents. Bassel’s smooth, evocative voice glides overhead, infusing the lyrics with warmth and dazzling timbres.

Captivating background harmonies imbue the music with velvety surface tones. I love the buttery flow of harmonics after the breakdown, as the melody shifts texture and flavor, going from potently funky to an orchestral jazz descant, exuding dreamy, creamy colors combined with softly steaming strings crowned by Bassel’s tantalizing, mesmerizing falsetto.

“Stepping Back In Time” is wondrously wrought, full of infectious funk flavors, as well as luxurious cashmere ambiance as the melody metamorphoses with grand, exquisite beauty.
